Primary School of Corozal

(Corozal, Ometepe, Nicaragua)

The Primary School of Corozal is located in the village of Corozal on the southeast side of the island of Ometepe (see map below). This village is the most isolated of TALICA's partnered schools, with only two buses passing through daily. This school serves around 125 students, pre-school through sixth grade and ranging from 5 - 15 years of age. Families make a living farming and providing for themselves with an average monthly household income at round $30.00.

TALICA visited the school in May of 2007 and discussed with teachers to idea of starting a lending textbook and literature library. The idea was embraced and after many hours of planning and preparing the book lists, together the community of Corozal and TALICA were able to establish the first major textbook collection. Corozal now has over 400 textbooks which has lowered the student/textbook ratio substanially to allow all students access to books at school and in the home.

TALICA celebrates the efforts of these most dedicated teachers and families! Congratulations Corozal!!

parents waiting for the bus

Parents from Corozal traveled on bicycle for over an hour to help TALICA transport one set of textbooks and reference books by bus to the village school. We thank you!
