Mixed Rural School of Chixolis

(Chixolis, Guatemala)

chixolis

Preschool teacher from Chixolis shares a new story!

The school is located on the top of a steep hill between the towns of San Lucas Sacatepequez and Santiago Sacatepequez.  The majority of these families who live in this area speak the indigenous language, Kackchiquel.  The families work in agriculture, construction, and factories.  The school consists of six classrooms from first through fifth grade, educating up to 128 students.  The teachers here believe in bilingual education and making sure all students keep their indigenous language of Kackchiquel and master the Spanish language.  TALICA and teacher volunteers are working with the director and teachers to build classroom libraries and supply teachers with much needed paper, pencils, and other basic materials to supplement instruction.
