Eager third graders

This first through fifth grade school is located in Guatemala City’s zone 5.  The day starts before 6:30 am with working class mothers, fathers, or other family members walking their daughters to school.  Classes start at 7:00 with lessons that the teacher has written on the chalk board.  Students copy lessons and use one of few government issued workbooks to complete learning activities. Each subject is conducted in this manner and the single teacher is faced with helping each of the 33 students.  As the day comes to an end for the girls, the boys arrive around 1:00 pm to begin their studies in the same manner.

The school has no central library and no classroom libraries to supplement the minimum materials that are provided.  This school is striving to begin classroom libraries.  The teachers are committed to using the books and materials and are open to work with U.S. teacher volunteers to use the materials on an ongoing basis.  TALICA is committed to purchase, deliver, and facilitate the use of these materials.
