Proyecto Las Mujeres Saludables

Project Mission
TALICA has partnered with Nicaragua based not-for-profit organization Tototo Community Development Center. Together we are dedicated to securing adequate books, reference materials and other medical resources that will provide medical professionals with up-to-date information to guide women and teens to make healthy life decisions.
Crucial issues facing teenage girls and women:
- Improving overall physical and mental health
- Maintaining open dialogue between young girls, their mothers, and community mentors to reduce risky behavior among teens
- Securing adequate prenatal care that will lead to healthier babies at birth
- Educating women on domestic violence (What is it? How to leave it?)

2010 Accomplishments
We are developing the first ever medical and health library specializing in adolescent-addictions, teen motherhood-childbirth, parent/teen communication, mental health, domestic violence, and human sexuality. This collection will support weekly and biweekly individual counseling, group discussions, and workshops serving women and teens throughout Balgue and surrounding villages.

Occupational Therapist Tess Heiner sees patients each Wednesday
Nurses, Jenny Diaz and Thelma Diaz provide endless care and information to women and girls through regular classes and discussions.
Materials delivered to date:
Books and printed information
- Initial collection of 38 medical and health professional books
- Initial collection of 11 instructional and informational DVD’s
- Subscription to the professional magazine “La Bolentina” which focuses on women’s issues such as healthy life styles, parenting, and domestic violence prevention
- Variety of small much needed medical tools.
